Atheist

Atheist is a death metal band originally from Florida. Their music, highly technical, is a mix of brutal riffs and Latin arrangements, somewhat in the spirit of Cynic's cult album, Focus. They are part of a wave of increasingly technical metal bands: Watchtower, Sadus, Death, Coroner, Cynic... They recorded their first album, Piece of Time, in 1988 but had to wait until 1992 for it to be released. In 1991, the bassist, Roger Patterson, died in a car accident and Atheist recruited Tony Choy for the recording of the second album, Unquestionable Presence. Atheist split up a first time in 1992, the band reunited in 1993 and recorded Elements before splitting up for the second time. Atheist's members were close to the members of Death, SADUS, Cynic, and were part of the Tampa death wave.
