Opeth

Opeth is a Swedish progressive rock/metal band, originating from Stockholm. Founded in 1990, Opeth's style, based largely on the continuous presence of singer and guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt, is well anchored in the heavy metal tradition. The band is also sub-classified in death metal and progressive rock (or a combination of these genres) depending on the album and sometimes the song to which the critic is referring. On the one hand, Opeth borrows from the most brutal styles through guttural vocals and very aggressive instrumental sequences, while on the other, it stands out through melodic progressive sequences, very often gentle and captivating. This apparent dichotomy is present in all of the band's albums though to different degrees, which makes its classification into a musical style all the more complex.
