Poison is an American glam metal band originating from Pennsylvania that was one of the most popular in its country during the 1980s. Bret Michaels and Rikki Rockett formed a first band, "Paris", in 1983, in their town of Harrisburg, in central Pennsylvania, soon completed by Bobby Dall and guitarist Matt Smith. They decided to go and settle in Hollywood the following year. Guitarist C. C. DeVille, who had played in various hard rock bands between New York and Los Angeles, quickly took the place of Matt Smith, and the quartet became Poison. The line-up adopted effeminate outfits (scarves, makeup, permed hairstyles), which gave a sort of Hollywood version of the New York Dolls. After a short-lived association with the legendary entrepreneur Kim Fowley, the band signed a contract with Enigma, a Capitol label, in 1985.
