WebsiteThe band's name comes from the Palatine town of Ramstein (near Kaiserslautern), in reference to the Ramstein air disaster that occurred during an air show at the American Ramstein air base in 1988, in which 70 people lost their lives and 346 others were injured. The band members write a song on the theme and title it Rammstein. Paul Landers, Christoph Schneider and Christian Lorenz then think of calling the band Rammstein-Flugschau ("Ramstein Air Show") against the opinion of the three other members. The band finally opts for the name Rammstein and decides to remove the Flugschau. The "m" was initially doubled inadvertently, but the band would later decide to keep this error, as Paul recounted a little later. It has enjoyed international success since its second album Sehnsucht, in 1997.
