Fantômas is an American avant-garde metal band, originally from California. The band's name is inspired by Fantômas, a fictional character featured in a series of crime novels popularized in France before the First World War. The band formed in 1998 when singer Mike Patton composed a handful of spasmodic and avant-garde songs just before the dissolution of his other band Faith No More. Patton then sent his compositions to friends in the hope of forming a new band: guitarist Buzz Osborne of the Melvins, bassist Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle (the band he had formed with Patton in high school), and drummer Igor Cavalera of Sepultura.
