After bowing out in 1992 with the basic death metal album An Evil Shade Of Grey, Cemetary, a Swedish band, began tinkering with the genre in order to soften its style in 1993. Incorporating both 1970s rock and gothic rock. Before Black Vanity, recorded in 1994, singer and guitarist Mathias Lodmalm threw out the rest of the band, choosing to produce the album he wanted. The result pushed Cemetary further into gothic territory. The transformation into a gothic metal band was complete with the 1996 release of Sundown, which introduced the new team making up Lodmalm's band, Anders Iwers on guitar, Thomas Josefsson on bass, and Markus Nordberg behind the drums. Sundown was followed in 1997 by Last Confessions.
