Summoning is an Austrian black metal band, known for drawing its inspiration from Tolkien's world. The band was created in 1993 by its two members, Silenius and Protector. After a few black metal demos, they signed a contract with Napalm Records, where they released their first album, Lugburz, in 1995. The particularity of this album is that it borrows its titles, artwork, and lyrics from Tolkien's texts about Middle-earth. The band parted ways with its drummer, because he was an "asshole who thinks 'commercial'", and began working with keyboards and medieval sounds. The very particular result can be heard on their second album, Minas Morgul; thereafter, it would evolve with each album, but it is this first CD that would establish their style (and their success). In 1996, it was Dol Guldur that would build their reputation.
