Born on 9 August in Chicago (United States) to Haitian parents, he left the family home at 15 following an ultimatum from his father and went to New York. He was recruited by the singer Gary US Bonds to become musical director / bassist of his American tour and also singer for the group The Flamingos. He then became, through a classified ad, the bassist of the Plasmatics. After 2 years and 2 albums, he left the band with the aim of signing a solo contract. He turned down offers to play bass for Prince or Billy Idol. He met Steven Van Zandt, who was preparing a new album for Bruce Springsteen. Van Zandt convinced him to join his band Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul. He took part in two of the band's albums in 1982 and 1984. He began a solo career, signing with Virgin Records for Europe and Columbia Records for the United States.
