Formed in: 1985
The band was formed in 1985 in Los Angeles by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner. They signed their first album with Epitaph Records and then with the label Sub Pop in 1989. Their name comes from an American slang expression from the 1950s, square (literally "square", designating a person who understands nothing, who is not "hip") in reference to the shape formed by the letters L7. One can also see in it an allusion to a sexual position. Or to a play on words, Hell is Heaven. In 1991, the band created Rock For Choice, a "Pro-Choice" association, that is, supporting women's right to abortion. This initiative was supported by other bands of the time such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Rage Against the Machine. Rock for Choice still exists today and organizes concerts.
