In spring 2010, Mark Jansen, Jack Driessen and Sander Gommans, all three former members of After Forever, decided to create a new symphonic metal project. The subsequent sessions defined a musical direction oriented toward technical death metal, combined with the symphonic arrangements characteristic of their former bands. Sander, however, felt he did not have the time to devote himself to this new band, and was replaced by Frank Schiporst. The band, soon named MaYaN because of Jansen's fascination with the Mayan civilization, was completed by Isaac Delahaye (Epica), Jeroen Paul Thesseling (Pestilence) and Ariën van Weesenbeek (Epica).
