Katatonia is a Swedish alternative metal band formed in 1991. Rooted at first in extreme Metal, they evolved their music toward a more subdued, lyrical metal. The band appeared with Jhva Elohim Meth, a first EP close to melancholic black metal. The band was then only a duo made up of Jonas Renkse on vocals and drums and Blackheim on guitar. In 1993, the band expanded its line-up and released an album in the same vein but more "produced" and less immediate, Dance of December souls, which foreshadowed a slight doom metal side. In 1995 Katatonia released the EP For Funerals To Come, followed by the album Brave Murder Day in a doom/black/death vein with the singer of Opeth on vocals. Jonas Renkse had in fact lost his voice by the time of the recording session and was called in for help.
