The band was formed in December 1980 in Los Angeles, or in 1981 according to other sources. Guitarist David Carruth met, shortly after the band's formation, Brian Slagel, founder of the Metal Blade Records label. Having become friends, Slagel was working on a compilation linked to the heavy metal magazine called The New Heavy Metal Revue, and offered the band Bitch the chance to place one of their demos on the compilation. This compilation project was titled Metal Massacre, bringing together various bands such as Ratt or even Steeler and notably launched the career of Metallica. The demo of the track Live for the Whip was released in 1982 on the first edition of Metal Massacre as the second track. The first EP, Damnation Alley, was released the same year via Metal Blade Records, and the following year, the band put out its first studio album titled Be My Slave.
