Helix was formed in 1974 during an arm-wrestling contest in Kitchener, Ontario, by drummer Bruce Arnold. The band was originally a sextet, which included Arnold, singer Brian Vollmer, guitarists Ron Watson and Rick « Minstrel » Trembley, keyboardist Don Simmons, and bassist Keith « Bert » Zurbrigg, who always wore his fetish tuxedo on stage. The band was initially named The Helix Field Band, which would later be shortened to Helix. Trembley left a few months later, and the band became a quintet. Shortly after, Helix played a few Del Shannon concerts in Canada. However, the original lineup broke up in 1976, and three new members came in.
