Sarcofago is one of the first extreme metal bands to have appeared in Brazil. Signed to the legendary Brazilian label Cogumelo Records, which signed among others the first album of Sepultura as well as legends of Brazilian extreme metal such as Mutilator, Vulcano, Cirhosis... They are considered to be among the precursors of the Black metal genre (appearance of frantic blast beats, satanism...). According to Metalion, editorialist of the Norwegian fanzine Slayer, very influential during the explosion of the Black metal wave from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, Euronymous is said to have been directly inspired by the photos of Sarcofago on the album I.N.R.I, where they sport corpsepaint, leather and studded bracelets, in order to create the nascent aesthetic of black metal.
