The band formed in 1983 at the instigation of the famous drummer Carmine Appice after he met singer Mark Free. Together with guitarist Earl Slick, King Cobra recorded a few tracks and got signed by Capitol Records, mainly because of Appice's fame. In 1984, the band recorded its first album and Carmine Appice hired new musicians. The following year, the album "Ready To Strike" was released and achieved deserved success because it is excellent. In 1986, it was the album "Thrill Of A Lifetime" that scored a hit in turn. Unfortunately, Carmine Appice's iron grip meant that personnel changes became commonplace over the months. In 1987, singer Mark Free left in turn following disagreements over the production of the third album. After this failure, Carmine Appice stopped the band and joined John Sykes in Blue Murder.
