WebsiteThe band was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1980 by Hank Shermann of the band Brats and King Diamond of the band Black Rose. In early 1981, they helped Michael Denner and his band Danger Zone make demo recordings. Michael Denner and Timi Grabber later joined Mercyful Fate. The line-up was not stable. Michael Denner left for a new band, then returned. The drummer position was particularly unstable and was finally filled by Kim Ruzz. In early 1982, the band took part in the Ebony Records record Metallic Storm. Later that same year, Mercyful Fate recorded their first release, Mercyful Fate, nicknamed by fans Nuns Have No Fun, on vinyl and for the label Rave-On. This first release included heavy metal songs dealing with the devil.
