The band was formed in 1985 in Los Angeles. It initially performed under the name Dataclan, and opted for a rather glam rock look, and its music was quite close to the Duran Duran style. In 1986, the name Love/Hate was chosen; it is the name of one of the band's compositions and their music style now leaned more towards a new version of the British band The Cult. In 1989, after spending some time touring the clubs of the west coast, they signed a contract with Columbia Records and began recording their first album.
