IQ

A first sketch of IQ appeared in 1976 with the band The Lens, made up among others of Peter Nicholls, Mike Holmes and Martin Orford. The line-up essentially created instrumental compositions, with however some singular vocal contributions from Nicholls. Some pieces created then would later be reused on IQ's albums. From 1981, the band was made up of Martin Orford on keyboards, Mike Holmes on guitar, Tim Esau on bass and Mark Ridout on percussion. The band made a name for itself on the London scene, playing as the opening act for its alter ego Marillion at the famous Marquee Club.
