Skeletonwitch was formed in 2003 in Athens, Ohio, when guitarist Hedrick received a demo from Serkesoron, Nate Garnette's former band, while they were students at Ohio University. Skeletonwitch released its first album, At One with the Shadows, on 11 August 2004 on the label Shredded Records. After forming the band, they looked for a singer and recruited Nate's older brother, Chance Garnette. After signing to the label Prosthetic, Skeletonwitch released Beyond the Permafrost in October 2007. In 2008, Skeletonwitch took part in Danzig's Blackest of the Black tour.
