In May 2016, when he fell ill, he was temporarily replaced by Mikkey Dee (ex-Motörhead) in Scorpions for the duration of a tour. In September 2016, the replacement became permanent, and James Kottak left the band by mutual agreement, due to his alcohol-related problems. James Kottak died on January 9, 2024, in Louisville, at the age of 61.
