In January 2011, he announced his temporary retirement from the band in order to receive treatment. He had reportedly contracted necrotizing fasciitis caused by a spider bite. He died on May 2, 2013 in a local Los Angeles hospital, near his home in the Inland Empire in the state of Southern California at the age of 49 from liver failure. On May 9, 2013, an official announcement stated that the cause of his death was due to cirrhosis of the liver, linked to alcohol consumption.
