Anathema was formed in England in the late 1980s in Liverpool by Darren White, the Cavanagh brothers, Danny and Vincent, and bassist Duncan Patterson. The line-up is one of the pioneers of death-doom along with My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost, a musical style that mixes the slowness of doom metal with the vocal style and musicality of the then-emerging death metal movement. The first album, Serenades, released in 1993, is an example of this style. After the release of the EP Pentecost III in 1995 and the departure of their vocalist Darren White, Anathema changed musical direction. On Eternity (1996), the band abandoned the guttural vocals and evolved toward a more atmospheric music, up to the appearance of electronics in its later compositions.
