Ancient Rites is a Belgian black metal (formerly) / folk metal (now) band created in 1989. The original line-up consisted of Gunther Theys on vocals and bass, Johan and Phillip on guitars, and finally Stefan on drums. In 1990 their demo Dark Ritual was released. Shortly after the release of their first official production, Philip died in a car accident, and shortly afterwards Stefan took his own life. Despite the loss of these two founding members, the other members of the band decided to carry on the adventure. The roadie Walter Van Cortenberg then replaced Stephan on drums.
