WebsiteApocalyptica is a Finnish metal band made up of cellists and a drummer, notable for devoting its repertoire to heavy metal music, whether original compositions or covers. Apocalyptica was founded in 1993 by Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja and Antero Manninen (replaced by Perttu Kivilaakso after his departure in 1999), all from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. The band's leader and composer is Eicca Toppinen. Apocalyptica became known in 1996 by covering Metallica's tracks on the cello and by opening for the latter during their tour in Finland.
