Arch Enemy was created by Michael Amott when he left the grindcore / death metal band Carcass. The two guitarists Michael Amott and his brother Christopher Amott (Armageddon) teamed up with singer Johan Liiva and session drummer Daniel Erlandsson in what Michael Amott called "an attempt to join a melody with aggression and technicality". The band's first record, Black Earth, came out on the now-defunct Wrong Again Records in 1996. It achieved good success in Japan, capped by the broadcast on MTV of the single Bury Me An Angel, while success was more moderate in Sweden. At that point, Arch Enemy was more a solo project than a real band.
