Cancer is a death metal band formed in 1987 in Telford, England; the band then consisted of three members, John Walker on guitar and vocals, Carl Strokes on drums, and Ian Buchanan on bass. In 1990 the band released To the Glory End, their first album. In 1991, the band enlisted the services of James Murphy, a legendary death metal guitarist who had played with Death and Obituary, Florida bands that were the worldwide pioneers of death metal. So with James Murphy, the band recorded Death Shall Rise, a great death metal album, in the vein of To the Glory End. In 1993, James Murphy left the band; he would then join Testament, a Californian thrash metal band, and the band replaced him with Barry Savage.
