Chastain was formed in 1984 by guitarist David T. Chastain. The band was built thanks to Mike Varney, president of Shrapnel Records, around a solo album by David T. Chastain. Varney would notice the guitar playing of Chastain, a member of the Cincinnati band CJSS, and wished, at that period, to combine it with the talent of the young singer Leather Leone, a former member of the San Francisco band Rude Girl. The band's first lineup consisted of Leone, Chastain, CJSS bassist Mike Skimmerhorn and drummer Fred Coury, who would play in the band Cinderella.
