Contraband was formed in 1990, and made up of several members of famous rock bands of the 1980s, such as Ratt, Vixen, or L.A. Guns. The band was born from a joint concert of the bands Vixen and Ratt, with Michael Schenker (Scorpions) as a guest on guitar, during MTV's Unplugged show. Contraband, however, only made a single album, self-titled, on June 29, 1991. The latter, after a rather lukewarm critical reception, was a commercial failure. It features Mark Spiro, Roy Brown and David Bowie on Hang On to Yourself. Contraband subsequently disbanded quickly, at the end of a tour with Ratt. In the United States, the album ranked 187th on the charts. In the United Kingdom, their only chart entry came in July 1991 with the single All the Way from Memphis.
