Gunther Theys of Ancient Rites formed Danse Macabre with Sotiris Vayenas (Septic Flesh) and George Zaharopoulos (Necromantia then Rotting Christ). However, the 2-track demo was never released. Shortly afterwards, the project collapsed. In 1997, Theys had found a new international line-up. With the support of Jan Yrlund, his bandmate in Ancient Rites, Miloš Marićević (bass), Arik Politi (keyboards), Merijn Mol and singer Kemi Vita, the first album Totentanz was recorded, released by Mascot Records in 1998. As a bonus, the two tracks from the previous line-up featured on the album. In 2000, Danse Macabre joined Hammerheart Records.
