Born to German-American parents, David Garrett received his first violin lessons from his father at the age of four. Very quickly the child prodigy became a student at the conservatories of Lübeck, then Berlin. At the age of nine, he made his debut at the Kissinger Sommer Festival. At the age of ten, he gave his first official concerts under his mother's name; he played the Zigeunerweisen by Pablo de Sarasate accompanied by the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Gerd Albrecht. At twelve, he became a student of the British violinist Ida Haendel. At the age of thirteen, he received an exclusive contract from Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft, for which, at the age of fifteen, he recorded Paganini's 24 Caprices.
