Dissection was a Swedish melodic black/death metal band founded in 1989, which split up in 2006 shortly before the suicide of its leader Jon Nödtveidt on 16 August of the same year. Dissection formed in 1989 in Strömstad around guitarist and singer Jon Nödtveidt and bassist Peter Palmdahl. The band was later completed with the arrival of drummer Ole Öhman, whom Jon knew from having already played alongside him in another band. In 1990, the band recruited John Zwetsloot, and it was with this line-up that the band recorded its first demo, The Grief Prophecy. In July 1997, Jon Nödtveidt became an accomplice in the murder of Josef Ben Maddour, a 37-year-old Algerian homosexual. Jon was sentenced to eight years in prison. He would be released in 2004 and reform Dissection.
