Website
Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band founded in 2002 by guitarist Mark Jansen. Initially named Sahara Dust, this project would first have as its frontwoman Helena Michaelsen, from the band Trail of Tears. At the beginning of 2003, she was replaced by Simone Simons, Mark Jansen's girlfriend at the time. The band's definitive name, Epica, was chosen in reference to the Kamelot album of the same name. Their first album, The Phantom Agony, released in June 2003, is produced by Sascha Paeth. It is said to be committed/engaged, unlike their second album Consign to Oblivion, whose theme is Mayan civilization. In 2007, their 3rd album is released: The Divine Conspiracy, which combines a still very melodic sound with an increase in power, and a return to committed songs as with the first album.
