The band's founders, twin brothers Joel Madden and Benji Madden, grew up in the small town of Waldorf, Maryland ("in the middle of nowhere" according to Benji). Both decided to devote themselves to music after attending a Beastie Boys concert, touring for their album Ill Communication. In 1996, they formed a band with their childhood friends Paul Thomas (bass) and Aaron Escolopio (drums). They gave their first concert in a friend's basement, in front of about twenty people. At that time they only played original compositions, being according to Joel "really too bad to cover another band's songs". A second guitarist, Billy Martin, joined them later.
