Mordred was formed in 1984 in San Francisco, California. The band would not manage to distinguish itself from the other thrash bands of the era. Mordred comprised singer Scott Holderby, guitarists Danny White and J. Taffer, bassist Art Liboon, and drummer Gannon Hall. Their first studio album, titled Fools Game, released in 1989, includes a cover of the song Superfreak by Rick James, with DJ Aaron (Pause) Vaughn on the turntables. After replacing Taffer with guitarist James Sanguinetti, and making Vaughn a permanent member, the band decided to adopt funk for its upcoming album, In this Life, released in 1991. Despite the modest success of the single Falling Away, tensions surfaced within the band, and the release of the EP Visions in 1992 marked the end of the band.
