Morgoth is a German death metal band formed in 1987 by Rüdiger Hennecke and Carsten Otterbach in Meschede. It was originally called Cadaverous Smell, and it played grindcore. When Harry Busse joined the band, they renamed themselves Minas Morgul. In 1987, the band settled on Morgoth when singer and bassist Marc Grewe came to join them. The name comes from the first Dark Lord in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth cycle. They recorded their demo Pits of Utumno on 4 tracks in 1988, which allowed them to sign with the newly created Century Media. In 1989, Morgoth recorded its second demo Resurrection Absurd on 24 tracks in the studio, released the same year by Century Media as an EP. The band went on tour in Germany to support Pestilence and Autopsy. The Eternal Fall was recorded afterwards.
