The band was founded in 1988 by Mark Arm (vocals), Steve Turner (guitar), Dan Peters (drums), and Matt Lukin (bass). Mark Arm and Steve Turner had known each other since Green River (formed in 1984). Their first productions on the Sub Pop label, which achieved relative success, contributed to the definition of the "Seattle sound" and of grunge. A first maxi 45 rpm called SuperFuzz BigMuff, containing among others Touch Me I'm Sick, was released in 1988 on Sub Pop. Mudhoney then followed up with two albums on the same label, Mudhoney in 1989 (from which Spacemen 3 covered the track When Tomorrow Hits) and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge in 1991. Following the good reception of these records and the media phenomenon around Seattle and grunge, they signed to the major Reprise Records. Mudhoney's first album on Reprise is Piece of Cake (1992).
