The band was formed in New York in 1985 by bassist Dan Lilker, who was then playing in Anthrax and was looking for even more aggressive sonic sensations, and singer John Connelly, who had also had a brief stint in Anthrax. While in the early 80s thrash metal was dominated by its founding bands all originating from California (Metallica, Exodus, Testament, Megadeth, Slayer), Nuclear Assault was among the first to emerge from New York alongside Overkill and Anthrax. Its music is a most intense blend of hardcore and thrash metal. This style was called Crossover. Its first two albums, Game Over in 1986 and Survive in 1988, are considered references in their style. They split up in 1993, by which time Dan Lilker had already left to form Brutal Truth.
