The band formed on Long Island in 1990. At that time, it consisted of vocalist Darryl Wagner, guitarists Guy Marchais and Rob Shimonski, bassist Chris Basile and drummer Mike Andrejko. Its name is the English technical term for fever, also "Pyrexie" in German. A few months after their formation, Pyrexia released their first demo album, made up of four tracks of hard, fast but groovy death metal. The band quickly found favor with the New York underground scene and their demo gradually became known beyond the borders of the USA. In 1993, they signed a recording contract with the Spanish label Drowned. They then released their first full-length album, Sermon Of The Mockery.
