Skeletonwitch se forma en 2003 en Athens, Ohio, cuando el guitarrista Hedrick recibe una demo de Serkesoron, antigua banda de Nate Garnette, mientras eran estudiantes en la Universidad de Ohio. Skeletonwitch publica su primer álbum, At One with the Shadows, el 11 de agosto de 2004 en el sello Shredded Records. Tras formar la banda, buscan un cantante y reclutan al hermano mayor de Nate, Chance Garnette. Tras firmar con el sello Prosthetic, Skeletonwitch publica Beyond the Permafrost en octubre de 2007. En 2008, Skeletonwitch participa en la gira Blackest of the Black de Danzig.
