Formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA between the mid-80s and early 90s by songwriter and guitarist Doug Gordon. In 1985, Tangier, made up of Bill Mattson (vocals), Doug Gordon (guitar, songwriter), Rocco Mazzella (guitar, songwriter), Mike Kost (bass) and Mark Hopkins (drums), released a self-titled record recorded at the studio located at the top of the Galaxy in Somerdale, NJ. After minor local success, Gordon decided to dissolve Tangier and make a fresh start. He wrote new songs and reformed the band in a more bluesy style with Doug, Bill, Garry Nutt and Gari Saint (both from Chubby Checker's band), and Jimmy Drnec (former drummer of Cinderella).
