Theory in Practice was founded in Sandviken in 1995 by Peter Lake (guitar), Matthias Engstrand (bass, keyboards) and Henrik Ohlsson (drums). Shortly after, Johan Ekman joined the band as singer. In May 1996, the first demo Submissive was recorded at Peter Tägtren's Abyss Studio. The demo sold well in the underground and secured the young line-up a recording contract with the Singaporean label Pulverized Records. The first album Third Eye Function came out in 1997 and was recorded at the Sunlight Studios in Stockholm. Johan Ekman left the band shortly after because he wished to study music.
