Website
The Sisters of Mercy [ðə ˈsɪstəz ə ˈmɜːsɪ] is a British gothic rock band, originally from Leeds, England. It was formed in 1980 by Andrew Eldritch and Gary Marx. Andrew Eldritch states that the band's name is inspired by a Leonard Cohen song where the phrase "the sisters of mercy" alternately referred to a religious order of the same name and to prostitutes. Another explanation, more likely [why?], exists as to the origin of the band's name, which would be a reference to the sisters of the Brontë Family, writers originally from Leeds like the band. Very influential in gothic circles, the band nonetheless released only three albums in over 30 years of existence. Work on sound and melody has always characterized their works. Their concerts are often described as an "experience," including layers of thick smoke accompanied by light effects.
