Umbra et Imago was originally formed as a parallel band to that of The Electric Avantgarde. The following year, the two bands coexisted. The Electric Avantgarde decided to steer towards death metal, but it disbanded then reformed under the name Dracul. Umbra et Imago then became Mozart's main band. In 1992, Umbra et Imago played its first concert accompanied by visual effects that play a major role. While the band's style is dominated by electronic influences, they have artists such as Peter Heppner of Wolfsheim take part. The band develops an exaggerated image and becomes popular for its eccentric concerts. That same year, their album Träume, Sex und Tod was released, followed a year later by Infantile Spiele.
