Vio-lence was formed in 1985 from the coming together of Jerry Birr (vocals), Phil Demmel (guitar), Troy Fua (guitar), Eddie Billy (bass, brother of Chuck Billy) and Perry Strickland (drums). The band briefly used the names Death Penalty, then Violence, before opting for the typography of Vio-lence. This line-up recorded the track Gutterslut, which appears on the compilation Eastern Front (Live at Ruthies). Shortly after, Eddie Billy left the band and was replaced by Dean Dell. Vio-lence then recorded a cassette of its rehearsals, which it distributed as a demo.
