The name Vlkodlak (a Czech word meaning "the werewolf" or "the village drunkard") was adopted in the summer of 2000 by five musicians from Neuchâtel and Lausanne. In its early days, Vlkodlak played a metal at the crossroads of black, heavy, atmospheric metal, even gothic or progressive rock. The band, then composed of Marie Jordi (guitar), Céline Decollogny (keyboards), Stéphane Materna (vocals, guitar), Ludovic Evard (drums) and Nicolas Soguel (bass), gave a few concerts, notably at the Case à Chocs in Neuchâtel. After Ludovic's departure came two lean years while waiting for the ideal drummer. In the end, Olivier Voirol joined the band at the end of 2002. Vlkodlak now had a new repertoire, new tracks that increasingly incorporate folk and acoustic elements; Stéphane established himself as the band's main composer.
