In the spring of 1969, the band The Empty Vessels, made up of Martin Turner, Steve Upton and Glen Turner, from Torquay, decided to seek their fortune in London. There they met Miles Copeland, who became their manager. The elder brother of Stewart Copeland, he would later become the manager of Police and Squeeze. Glen, Martin's younger brother, was not happy in the capital and preferred to return to Torquay. To find a replacement, Miles suggested placing an ad in the Melody Maker: "Lead guitarist: Think positive, creative, adapts well, for a strong future band". At the auditions, Martin and Steve faced a dilemma. Whereas they only intended to recruit a single musician, they found themselves facing two very good guitarists, Andy Powell and David "Ted" Turner. In the end, unable to make up their minds, they kept both.
