Die kleine Stadt Ipswich (England) sah 1982 die Gründung der Band Napalm Death. "Scum", ihr erstes Werk, erschien 1987 auf ihrem eigenen Label Earache. Dieses Album wurde von zwei Line-ups aufgenommen, das erste bestand aus Justin Broadrick (Gitarren), Nick Bullen (Gesang/Bass) und Mick Harris (Schlagzeug). Bill Steer (Gitarre), Jim Whitely (Bass), Lee Dorrian (Gesang) und erneut Mick Harris sollten das zweite Line-up bilden. Zwei Jahre nach "Scum" veröffentlichte Napalm Death "From Enslavement To Obliteration", sein zweites Album. Lee Dorrian sollte die Band anschließend verlassen, um Cathedral ins Leben zu rufen. 1990 war Napalm Death zurück mit den Gitarristen Jesse Pintado und Mitch Harris sowie Mark "Barney" Greenway am Gesang. Die Band nahm daraufhin "Harmony Corruption" auf. Zwei Jahre später gründete Mick Harris Scorn und wurde für "Utopia Banished" ersetzt.
