Lleva una carrera en solitario pero también aparece en numerosos álbumes como invitado (Front Line Assembly, Paradise Lost, Ayreon, Gojira…) y/o productor (Soilwork, Lamb Of God, Bleeding Through, Gwar, Zimmer's Hole…). También grabó algunas demos en compañía de Jason Newsted (entonces en Metallica) a través de IR8 (trío que incluye también a Tom Hunting de Exodus) y Tree Of The Sun (cuarteto con Scott Reeder de Kyuss y Dale Crover de los Melvins).

Coming from the concept album that bears his name, Ziltoid is a galactic dictator who threatens to destroy humanity if he isn't served the best cup of coffee in the world. Cruel but also a bit ridiculous, this alien was dreamed up by Devin Townsend out of a sock puppet, and he voices him on the album. The story doesn't stop there, since he got a second tale titled "Z²".
